Miami - Two FIU journalism students--Yolanne Almanzar and Jose Pagliery--have been selected by the editors of the New York Times to participate in the second New York Times Hispanic Student
Journalism Institute which will be held at the University of Arizona in January 2008. This makes
six FIU journalism students who have been selected to participate in the prestigious Times institute in two years--more than from any other journalism school in the United States.
Yolanne and Jose, both seniors, will be joining 18 other students who were part of a national
competition for the slots. Some of the other students selected attend CUNY's journalism school,
NYU, University of Virginia, University of Nebraska and Texas A&M.
The New York Times inaugurated the institute at FIU's School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) in January 2007; SJMC will alternate hosting the event each year with U. of Arizona. Don Hecker, Director of the Times' Student Institute, has confirmed that the institute will be returning to SJMC in January 2009.
Allan Richards, chair of FIU's Department of Journalism and Broadcasting, attributes the SJMC's
success to "Great faculty, hardworking students and a dynamic program . . . The SJMC is clearly the powerhouse journalism school in the Southeast, and is a rising star on the national scene."
