SJMC to launch new Writing Center

Florida International University, School of Journalism Mass Communication, Biscayne Bay Campus, Miami, Florida: February 21, 2007

The Scripps Howard Foundation has awarded FIU’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication a three-year $150,000 grant for a writing center. The center will open March 1, 2007.

The Writing Center will be a free resource offering students coaching and editing support from writing consultants who will be drawn from SJMC instructors and graduate students. It will include one-on-one tutoring, small group workshops, literary resources and a weekly online chat room.

The writing consultants will advise in all aspects of non-fiction writing for all SJMC disciplines: Print & Broadcast Journalism and Advertising & Public Relations. Allan Richards, chair of the SJMC, says, “The center is designed to help students put grammar into action. We are not here to rewrite students’ papers. Clients who come to the center will be engaged in discussions on logic, style and technique. This is an exciting new venture for all of us.”

TWC will be located at FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus in the Academic II (ACII) building, Room 303. The hours will be posted on the TWC door and on the SJMC Web site. Students may make appointments or drop in without an appointment. For additional information or to make an appointment e-mail: Kate MacMillin (macmilli@fiu.edu). Phone: 305.919.4504.
